- I avoided the problem by switching to WinVN for a news reader. The archiving
- isn't as nice, but I like it other than that. (To archive an article, I forward it to
- myself & let Eudora archive it.)

- I posted this problem before, but I got no response, so I will try one more
- time. Perhaps someone can help me with a small problem I seem to be having.
-
- At work I am running Trumpet Winsock in norton desktop for window, windows ver
- 3.1. I have been checking out two different types of windows wais clients and
- I have developed a problem with both.
-
- When I try to pull over a .src file I get a 'Invalid property value' error,
- and then after pressing OK, the entire application crashes on me. I cannot
- see to figure out what is wrong.
-
- I looked through my win, ndw, and system .ini files and have nothing pointing
- towards a .src file. And the exe's are normal archives under NDW.
-
- Now, this may sound like a simple stubid question, but I will dammed if I can
- figure out the cause of the problem. It works on another system, so I know
- the programs work. Though reinstalling windows and NDW are out of the question,
- on both systems I have updated many of the drivers etc, I would do a directory
- copy though the machines are not at the same location.
-
-
- Anyone know how to fix this? At least any ideas where to look?
-
- Thanks in advance.

- I'm glad you cleared up the DNS confusion had logged on to do that myself.
- Since I'm here I might as well pass on my experience with the VxD TCP/IP
- beta from Microsoft. I think its awesome! I'd been trying to figure out
- how the install both a winsock and the "IPX/SPX Compatible ,,," in W4WG,
- and neither Trumpet Winsock nor Chameleon would work on my machines. In
- fact that configuration crashed all network communications. The MS VxD
- winsock works great in this configuration. I found it very easy to install
- since it uses the standard Network Setup dialogues of W4WG 3.11 - a "cold
- start" install only took a couple of minutes and a reboot. I didn't notice
- the internet DNS to be any slower than the above mentioned winsocks, but
- maybe mine are always slow. I tested it with a number of popular apps:
- Mosaic, Trumpet Newsreader, TrmpTel, QVTnet, WS_FTP, Eudora, Hgopher,
- and Cello. Only Cello failed to run, but I suspect that this is a Cello
- problem with VxD's because I read here that it also fails with vxdtcpa2,
- and not a MS VxD bug per se. All the other apps ran extremely well, and,
- although I didn't run actual benchmarks, they all seemed to run very fast.
-
- Bottom line: If you have Windows for Workgroups 3.11, then Microsoft's
- VxD TCP/IP beta is your best bet in my opinion. Which brings up the
- standard disclaimers: all opinions expressed here are strictly my own
- and do not constitute any sort of endorsement, official or otherwise.

- Subject: No network buffers
-
- We are using Peter Tattam's Alpha 18 Winsock. Computer is Zeos DX-25. NIC is
- 3Com509. I've tried it with regular packet driver setup and with ODI. No
- difference.
-
- I have a user, unfortunately my boss, who has suddenly developed a problem
- with his winsock based clients. He was alternately getting messages about no
- network buffers, and a message about low network buffers from tcpman 4 of 16
- available. Mosaic etc. worked then ( with 4 buffers available). But he was
- concerned about the warning mesage, so he called in our Novell Network folks,
- who know not what they do with TCP/IP. They fooled around and now he gets
- no network buffers everytime. His setup is basically the same as mine and all
- our users except for having PC-Anywhere host drivers loaded. Any clues on
- debugging this? Can I see what is using his buffers by flagging some of the
- options under Trace in TCPMAN? Thanks for any help.

- Delete the news.grp file from your news directory and reconnect. News will
- then pull in all the groups from that sight.
-
- I dont think Trumpet News was designed to be more then a one sight news reader.
